Overview

Mexico enter their 18th World Cup as co-hosts and one of three nations organizing the tournament across North America. El Tri arrive with renewed energy under a veteran coach, and the home crowd across multiple U.S. venues is expected to be among the most passionate of the tournament. Expectations are high but tempered by recent knockout-round disappointments.

Road to World Cup 2026

Mexico qualified automatically as one of the three host nations, alongside Canada and the United States. Under Javier Aguirre the side used a series of international friendlies and CONCACAF Nations League matches to build cohesion and test younger players before the tournament opens at Estadio Azteca on June 11.

Qualification: Host (co-organizer)

Key Players to Watch

  • Hirving Lozano
  • César Montes
  • Luis Chávez
  • Edson Álvarez

Strengths

Deep squad, tournament experience, and the comfort of playing most group matches in familiar time zones. Mexico's full-back depth and wing play give them a number of attacking patterns to break down defensive sides.

Weaknesses

Conversion in front of goal and concentration in defence during set pieces have been recurring issues. Mexico have also struggled to control midfield against elite possession sides, which is a concern in the knockout rounds.

World Cup 2026 Chances

A fourth consecutive round-of-16 exit would be considered a disappointment for a host nation. A run to the quarter-finals is a realistic ceiling; anything beyond would require an upset against a European or South American powerhouse.

Historical World Cup Performance

Mexico have qualified for every World Cup since 1994 and are the most consistent CONCACAF side in tournament history, with two quarter-final appearances in 1970 and 1986, both hosted on home soil. The 2026 edition marks their third time as a host nation.

Best result: Quarter-finals (1970, 1986)

Last World Cup: Group stage (2022)
